Terms of service
What Solon does and doesn’t do, how plans and refunds work, what you may and may not do with it, and what each of us is responsible for.
The short version
- Each plan is one payment. There’s no subscription, nothing renews, and projects don’t expire.
- A project counts as used when you run its session. Before that, deleting it gives it back.
- You can ask for a full refund within 14 days of a purchase if you haven’t run a session in any project made with it. Once you have, that purchase isn’t refundable, except where the law says otherwise.
- The panel is synthetic and the report is AI-written research material, not survey results. Decisions you make with it are yours.
- Describe a real person in My People only with their permission.
This agreement
These terms are between you and AGBK Productions LLC, trading as Solon, 240 Harriman Road, Irvington, NY 10533, USA (“we”, “us”). By creating an account, buying a plan or using Solon, you accept them. If you accept for a company, you confirm you’re allowed to bind it, and “you” means the company.
Our privacy policy explains how we handle personal data and how to have it erased.
Solon runs on Iridiom, the software platform it’s built on, and some screens and emails at app.solon.studio may carry the Iridiom name. For Solon, these terms apply.
What Solon does
- Recruits a panel. From your brief, Solon builds a panel of 3 to 8 synthetic people, each based on an anonymous public record from the US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, with a life story, a group style, a shopping profile and a way of talking written to fit it.
- Runs a focus group. An AI moderator runs one discussion with the panel from a guide you can read first, showing the materials you upload. You can watch it, with each person’s private thoughts.
- Reports on it. An AI analyst writes a report of the session, which you can download as a PDF, and the moderator answers up to 25 follow-up questions a project.
- Seats people you describe. My People lets you describe real people and seat a twin of each on your panels.
Solon uses Claude, made by Anthropic. Solon is not affiliated with, endorsed by or run by Anthropic, the US Census Bureau or any other agency whose public data it uses.
Synthetic research, and its limits
- The people on a panel are not real respondents. What they say is written by AI to fit a record and a brief. It can be wrong, inconsistent or unlike what real people would say.
- A panel is a handful of people. Nothing Solon produces is a statistically representative result, a forecast or a measurement of a market.
- The report is research material for you to judge. Check anything that matters with real people before you rely on it. You’re responsible for the decisions you make with it.
- Twins in My People are approximations of the people you describe, drawn from what you entered. They don’t speak for those people.
Your account
- You must be 18 or over. Solon is for business and professional use.
- Give accurate details and keep your sign-in safe. You’re responsible for what happens under your account and in your workspace.
- Tell us straight away at hello@solon.studio if you think someone else has got into your account.
What you put in, and My People
- Your brief and materials. Upload only material you have the right to use and to share with the providers that run Solon, including our AI provider. Don’t upload anything you aren’t allowed to disclose, such as a client’s confidential work without their agreement.
- Other people’s details. A brief or a material doesn’t need personal data about real people. If yours includes any, you’re responsible for having the right to share it with us for this purpose.
- My People. Describe a real person only with their permission, and only adults. Add a disability, their language or where they were born only if they agree. Upload a photo only if you have the right to and they’re happy for it to be shown in your workspace’s projects. If they ask you to remove them, remove them.
Acceptable use
You must not:
- upload anything you don’t have the right to use;
- present Solon’s output as the words or opinions of real people, or as the results of research with real respondents;
- use it to deceive people, to target or discriminate against anyone, or to make decisions about individuals, such as hiring, credit, housing or insurance;
- try to reach another customer’s data, or get around a limit, allowance or access control;
- scrape or automate Solon other than through features we provide, or put unreasonable load on it;
- resell access to Solon itself, or use it to build a competing product; or
- use it for anything unlawful.
Running focus groups for your own clients, and charging them for that work, is what Solon is for, as long as you tell them the panel is synthetic.
Plans and payment
Solon is sold as plans. Each is one payment. There’s no subscription, nothing renews, and you’re never charged again unless you buy again.
- Solon 1: 1 project, $29.
- Solon 5: 5 projects, $125.
- Solon 10: 10 projects, $220.
- More projects. You can buy any plan again. Each purchase adds its projects to the ones you have.
- The price you pay is the one shown at checkout. Prices are in US dollars and don’t include sales tax, VAT or similar taxes. Where those apply, you pay them, either to us if the law requires us to collect them, or directly to the tax authority.
- Payments are processed by Stripe. Your card details go to Stripe and never reach us.
Projects, and when one is used
A project is one focus group: a brief, a panel, one session, its report and its follow-up questions. Every project, on every plan, includes everything described under What Solon does.
- Projects don’t expire. A project you haven’t started stays available, and a project you’ve run stays open for as long as Solon is offered.
- Starting one. Creating a project takes one from your plan.
- When it’s used. A project counts as used when you run its session. Until then, if you delete it, you get the project back to use again. After that, deleting it doesn’t give it back.
- One session each. A project holds one session, so its report always matches the room that was in it.
- Limits. Reasonable limits keep the service fair, such as the number and size of uploads, the size of a panel, and 25 follow-up questions a project.
- Deleting a project removes it from your list. It doesn’t erase its data from our systems; see deleting your data.
Refunds
You can ask for a full refund within 14 days of a purchase if you haven’t run a session in any project made with it. Once you have, that purchase isn’t refundable, except where the law says otherwise.
- To ask, email hello@solon.studio from the address on your account within 14 days of the purchase.
- What a refund does. It cancels what the purchase paid for, and it doesn’t delete anything already made. Projects not yet started from it can no longer be started. If we refund a purchase after a project from it has been run, for example because the law requires it, anything that project still does isn’t part of what you paid for, and we may stop it.
- If you’re a consumer. Solon is sold for business and professional use. If you buy as a consumer and your local law gives you a right to cancel (in the EU and UK, 14 days), these terms don’t take that right away. To cancel under it, email hello@solon.studio within 14 days of your purchase saying you want to cancel. You don’t need to give a reason or use a form. We’ll refund you within 14 days of your message, the way you paid.
- Disputed payments. If you dispute a payment with your bank or card issuer, what that purchase paid for is suspended straight away, as with a refund. If the dispute is settled in our favor, email us and we’ll restore it.
Who owns what
- You own what you put in: your brief, materials and the details you enter. As between you and us, you also own the reports, transcripts and answers Solon makes for your projects. You can use them and share them with your clients, for any purpose, without crediting us, as long as you don’t present them as research with real people.
- You let us store, process and display your content, and send it to the providers who receive data, only to run Solon for you.
- AI-written text can resemble text written for someone else. We don’t promise that what Solon writes for you is unique.
- We own Solon: the software, its design, the name, the logo and the portrait library. The portraits on your panels are ours; you may show them as part of your reports, but not use them elsewhere. If you send us feedback, we may use it without owing you anything.
Availability and changes
- We work to keep Solon running, but we don’t promise it will always be available or free of errors. A session that stops partway can be resumed; download your report as a PDF if you need a copy that doesn’t depend on us.
- We may change, add or remove features, and change the AI models Solon uses.
Suspension and ending
- You can stop using Solon at any time. To have your data erased, see deleting your data.
- We may suspend or close your account if you break these terms, if a payment is reversed or disputed, or if the law requires it. We’ll tell you why, unless the law prevents us. If we close an account for breaking these terms, there’s no refund.
- If we ever stop offering Solon, we’ll email account holders first and give you time to download your reports.
- The sections on plans and payment, refunds, who owns what, warranties and liability, your responsibility for claims, governing law and general terms still apply after this agreement ends.
Warranties and liability
- Solon is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we make no promises beyond those in these terms, including about the accuracy of anything the panel, the moderator or the analyst says, or about whether any decision made with it is right.
- We’re not liable for lost profits, revenue, business, data or goodwill, or for any indirect or consequential loss.
- Our total liability for all claims is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or $100 if you paid nothing.
- Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law doesn’t allow to be limited, such as for fraud, gross negligence or willful misconduct, or your rights as a consumer under mandatory law.
Your responsibility for claims
If someone makes a claim against us because of what you uploaded, a person you described without their permission, how you presented Solon’s output, or because you broke these terms or the law, you’ll cover our reasonable costs and losses from it.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of the State of New York, USA. Disputes go to the state or federal courts in New York. If you’re a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws where you live and can bring a claim in your local courts.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. We’ll post the new version here with a new date, and email account holders about important changes before they take effect. A change doesn’t take away projects you’ve already paid for. If you keep using Solon after a change takes effect, the new terms apply.
General
- These terms are the whole agreement between us about Solon.
- If a court finds part of them unenforceable, the rest still applies.
- If we don’t enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later.
- You can’t transfer this agreement without our consent. We may transfer it to whoever takes over the business.
- We’ll send notices to the email address on your account. Send yours to hello@solon.studio.
